Alameda Power & Telecom (Alameda P&T) is proud to announce that our Energy Education Program
received the 2004 Community Service Award from the American Public Power Association (APPA)!
The award recognizes public power utilities that have shown a commitment to enhancing the quality of life in their
communities through activities that address a community need or improve the community's social, cultural, educational,
or economic environment, and at the same time provide an opportunity for employee involvement.
We intend to continue this program and expand its outreach to as many Alameda residents as possible.
The components of the Energy Education Program are:
- Geothermal Education Project: More then 50% of Alameda P&T's power comes from geothermal power plants in
Northern California. Alameda P&T provides classroom presentations to elementary, middle school, and high school students.
Some of the topics covered include earth dynamics, generation of electricity, geothermal resources, and energy efficiency.
- Solar Photovoltaic Middle School Project: To teach middle school students about solar energy,
Alameda P&T sponsored the installation of a one-kilowatt solar photovoltaic (PV) system at Lincoln Middle School in Alameda.
Combined with related classroom tools, the PV system teaches students first-hand about solar power and renewable resources.
In addition, the data collected from the solar PV panels is made available for math and science classes at all Alameda schools.
- Geothermal Power Plant Tours: For the past three years, we have hosted free day trips to the
Northern California Power Agency (NCPA) geothermal facilities located about 70 miles north of Alameda in Middletown, California.
More than 800 Alameda residents, including 150 middle school students, have participated in the tours that are offered over two
days each fall and spring.
Participants travel by coach to the facilities and stop for a complimentary lunch and presentation on geothermal energy
at the Calpine Geothermal Visitor Center.
The educational trips provide Alamedans with an opportunity to tour the facilities and
learn how clean and renewable geyser steam is transformed into electric power.
Residents also learn about the Effluent Pipeline Project
where treated wastewater from a nearby city is reinjected into the Geysers field,
thereby increasing the life of the Geysers as a valuable energy source and serving as an effective disposal
method for the wastewater.
- Neighborhood Program: For the last two years, in conjunction with the Alameda Police Department,
Alameda P&T has taken part in National Night Out, a nationwide crime prevention event.
Along with representatives from the Police Department, Alameda P&T visits several block parties,
making contact with almost 500 residents, to distribute ENERGY STAR® qualified compact fluorescent lightbulbs
and Energy Star fact information.
Alameda P&T takes pride in its clean and green power portfolio.
More than 80% of Alameda's power is generated using renewable resources such as geothermal and hydroelectric facilities.
We're also happy to support community goals and contribute to our City's unique quality of life!
