Your cable modem is assigned an IP address and in order
for your computer to be assigned an IP address,
your PC network settings must be set to "Obtain an IP address automatically"
via DHCP.
To check your network settings on:
- Windows 95/98
- Right click on Network Neighborhood and then Properties.
- Select TCP/IP for the Ethernet Adapter card installed on your computer.
- Click on the Properties button.
- Select the IP address tab and make sure that
"Obtain an IP address automatically" is selected.
- Click OK.
- Click OK again in the Network Window and then restart your
computer when it prompts you to do so.
- Windows 2000
- Right click on Network Neighborhood and then Properties.
- Select the LAN connection.
- Click on the Properties button.
- Select TCP/IP for the Ethernet Adapter card installed on your computer.
- Click on the Properties button.
- Make sure that "Obtain an IP address automatically" is selected.
- Click OK and close the remaining windows.
- Windows XP
- Right click on My Computer.
- Right click on My Network Places.
- Locate your on Board NIC.
- Right Click on it and then click on Properties.
- Under the General tab, locate your TCP/IP and click on Properties.
- Make sure that "Obtain an IP address automatically" is selected.
- Click OK and close the remaining windows.
Releasing and Renewing an IP address
For your computer to communicate with the AlamedaNET network,
your computer must have an IP address that is assigned from our network.
To make sure that you have an address that is assigned from the AlamedaNET server,
please follow the steps below.
- Releasing and Renewing an IP address
on a Windows 95/98 Machine
- Click the Start menu in the lower left hand part of the screen.
- Click Run.
- In the space provided type "winipcfg" and click OK.
- This will bring you to an IP configuration box: there will be a drop down
menu at the top that lists the your computer's installed network adapters.
- You must choose the Ethernet Adapter from the list to obtain the
correct TCP/IP information.
- Once you have done this click the More Info>> button.
- You will see the IP address that is associated with the each adapter.
- Click the Release All button and the IP address should go to all zeros.
- Click the Renew All button and the IP address box should have a new number.
- If the box is filled in with a 169.x.x.x number,
your computer is not accessing our DHCP server.
- If you are able to get a valid IP address, close these windows and
open a browser to get online.
- Releasing and Renewing an IP address on Windows NT/2000/XP
- Click the Start menu in the lower left hand part of the screen.
- Click Run.
- In the space provided type "ipconfig /release" and click OK.
Note that there is a space between ipconfig and the /release.
- To renew the IP address from the DOS prompt, type "ipconfig /renew". Note that there is a
space between ipconfig and the /renew.
- Releasing and Renewing an IP address on Windows XP
- Click the Start menu in the lower left hand part of the screen.
- Click Run.
- In the space provided type "ipconfig /release" and click OK.

- Type "ipconfig /renew". Note that there is a
space between ipconfig and the /renew.
- Releasing and Renewing an IP address on a Macintosh machine
- Select the Apple icon on your desktop.
- Select TCP/IP from the Control Panels drop down menu.
- Once you have selected TCP/IP, click the Options tab.
- The TCP/IP window will be displayed.
- Under MAKE TCP/IP: select Inactive and click the OK button to save the changes.
- Wait 2 minutes for the timers to release the current TCP/IP session.
- Select the Options tab again and the TCP/IP window will display again.
- Under MAKE TCP/IP: select Active and click the OK button to save the changes.
- Once the TCP/IP stack becomes active, our DHCP server should be contacted for
an IP configuration.
- Close the TCP/IP window.
