Might be worth attention. | Can we say "historical accuracy"?

Apparently Showtime can't. The series opened with the assassination of an imaginary uncle of Henry VIII, and that pretty well set the tone for the historical accuracy to be found in this series. Timelines are severely tampered with, and key characters are rebaptized and repackaged (Henry's two sisters, Mary, who had first married the King of France before she married Charles Brandon, and Margaret, who became Queen of Scotland and mother to Mary, Queen of Scots, become one sister, Margaret, who marries and murders the King of Portugal) or simply omitted (i.e., Henry Percy, whom Anne Boleyn had wanted to marry).
On the plus side, though, the performances are strong, and the production values luxurious. If you don't know the history, the inaccuracies probably won't bother you. Just don't fool yourself that you're learning anything! |
