Safety Tips

Electricity plays a very significant role in our daily lives. It heats, cools, and lights our homes and offices, making our lives both easier and safer. Like any power source, though, it can be very dangerous if used improperly.

Follow these electrical safety tips to ensure your family's welfare:

  • Have a certified electrician inspect your home to make sure that all wiring, fixtures, and devices comply with current codes.
  • If you have fuses, check each circuit to determine the proper fuse size and use only that size for the circuit.
  • When a fuse blows or a circuit breaker trips, you need to determine what caused the overload and fix it before you restore power.
  • If you have small children or pets, keep outlet covers in electrical outlets that are not in use.
  • In the event of an electrical fire, make sure everyone leaves the house or building and call 911. If the fire is small, unplug the appliance or electrical device and use a fire extinguisher or common baking soda to put out the fire. Never use water on an electrical fire.
  • Never try to move a fallen electrical wire. Warn others to stay away and report the problem to Alameda Power & Telecom.
