How does a product earn the ENERGY STAR?
ENERGY STAR manufacturer partners use a standard testing procedure to confirm that their products meet the high energy-efficiency guidelines set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy. If they do, they may place the label on their product.

How many products can the ENERGY STAR label be found on?
Currently, the ENERGY STAR can be found on products in over 35 categories, including lighting, appliances, office equipment, heating and cooling equipment, and even new homes. To date, Americans have purchased more than 1 billion ENERGY STAR qualified product models.

What is the energy-saving technology inside ENERGY STAR qualified home electronics that makes them more energy-efficient than other products?
Manufacturers have used a number of new technologies in their products to qualify them for the ENERGY STAR. These technologies include improved switch mode power supplies to reduce standby energy losses (i.e., power used when the device is switched "off"), changes in circuit design, adding "smart" chargers to prevent overcharging of cordless telephone batteries, providing energy-efficient displays, and using flash memory or Static RAM to manage standby power use. ENERGY STAR qualified home electronics incorporate the same features as their traditional counterparts with reduced energy use.

Which home electronics products have earned the ENERGY STAR?
The ENERGY STAR can be found on many home electronics products, such as TVs, plasma TVs, digital TVs, projection TVs, TV/VCR/DVD combination units, VCRs, DVD players, home audio systems (including surround sound), CD recorders, cordless phones, and cordless phones/answering machines combination units.

Where can I buy home electronics that have earned the ENERGY STAR?
You can purchase these products at most major retail chain stores as well as at smaller, local stores. Just remember to look for the ENERGY STAR! You can also find a store near you by visiting the Energy Star Store Locator.

Who makes home electronics that have earned the ENERGY STAR?
You will find products that have earned the ENERGY STAR made by the manufacturers of all the high-tech brands you recognize and trust. Did you know that two thirds of the top 20 TV models sold in the first quarter of 2003 were ENERGY STAR qualified? By designing for the environment, ENERGY STAR partners produce home electronics that perform the same as conventional models, yet they have an additional feature: they use less energy, which helps protect the environment!

How will I know if the product I choose has earned the ENERGY STAR?
ENERGY STAR partners make it easy for you to give the gift that gives a cleaner environment by placing the ENERGY STAR on either the product or the packaging, or both. Retail sales staff should also be able to help you locate these products within their stores. And if you're still not sure whether the product you're interested in has earned the ENERGY STAR, visit Energy Star's new Find a Product tools.

How much do these products cost?
Home electronics that have earned the ENERGY STAR cost the same as conventional products while performing the same or better. They come with an added bonus of using less energy so they save money as well as help protect the environment.
