Power Outages
Power outages are infrequent, but they sometimes do occur,
and it's wise to be prepared for any emergency. Alameda Power &
Telecom often knows about the problem and is working to solve it before you even call.
If you are experiencing problems with your electrical service, there are many things
that may be causing it.
In the case of a power outage, first check the circuit breakers
located in your home's electrical panel to see if one or more have been tripped.
If this is the case, contact a qualified electrician to remedy the problem.
If your breakers are not tripped, check with a neighbor to see if other
homes are also affected, then contact Alameda Power & Telecom at 510-748-3902.
After you have contacted Alameda Power & Telecom, wait while field personnel
correct the situation. In the meantime, you should turn off your electrical appliances
to guard against potential damage when power is restored.
Erratic Service Problems
In the case of erratic service or flickering lights, there can be a number of causes.
In severe wind, overhead transmission and distribution lines can slap
together causing your lights to flicker.
Extreme heat can also sometimes affect the quality of electrical service you receive.
If weather is good and you still notice flickering lights, call Alameda Power &
Telecom to correct the situation. We will check all electric lines running to your
electric meter and make any necessary repairs.
If this check does not fix the problem, you could have a circuit breaker box or
internal electrical wiring problem. In this case, you should call a licensed electrician
to immediately check out the situation.
For more information, or to perform a check of your electrical service, contact Alameda Power &
Telecom located at 2000 Grand Street, between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM Monday through Friday, or
call us at 748-3900.
The 2001 Energy Crisis and Blackouts
California's energy crisis of 2001 is behind us, but in order to protect customers,
Alameda Power & Telecom instituted a comprehensive Power Management Program.
As a result, rolling blackouts were not necessary in Alameda.
This program remains in a state of readiness and includes both emergency supplemental
power generation and customer conservation and energy management. Four emergency generators,
totaling up to 6 megawatts of power, are now available to reduce the demand our community
places on the State's electric system. This emergency generation, coupled with continued
customer conservation, make the utility prepared for future problems.
Please remember, though, that conservation remains a critical step for all Californians
in helping reduce the effects of the energy crisis.
We at Alameda Power & Telecom, as well as your fellow customers,
thank you for your past and current help in managing your energy needs.
