Alameda Under the Sun |
AP&T
The Greening of Alameda
Alameda is one of the most renewable and lowest greenhouse gas utilities in the country. We obtain the majority (over 80%) from geothermal, wind, landfill gas, and hydropower. Along with the rest of California utilities, AP&T is exploring ways to integrate solar into the mix.
THE BACKGROUND
California Sun
As part of the State of California's Million Solar Roofs Program, California has set a goal to create 3,000 megawatts of new, solar-produced electricity by 2017. This $3.3 billion program is designed to push the state toward a cleaner energy future and also help lower the cost of solar systems for consumers.
The California Solar Initiative calls for incentives over the next decade for existing residential homes and existing and new commercial, industrial, and agricultural properties.
Meanwhile, the New Solar Homes Partnership, managed by the California Energy Commission (CEC) will oversee a 10-year, $400 million program that will encourage solar in new home construction.
The overall goal is to help build a self-sustaining photovoltaic, solar electricity market.
The programs began in 2007 for the large investor owned Public Utilities (PG&E, SCE and SDG&E). and other California municipal electric utilities are required to develop similar programs by January 2008. Alameda Power & Telecom's program is now up and running to be ready for the January deadline.
