ALAMEDA'S POWER SUPPLY IN GOOD SHAPE

ALAMEDA, Calif., July 24, 2006 - Despite record heat and warnings from State regulators, Alamedans are again in the enviable position of having secure power supplies and should not be subject to power curtailment measures or "rolling blackouts."

According to General Manager Valerie Fong, "We're fully resourced, and they're the right kind of resources, clean and renewable, with little to no greenhouse gas emissions. As long as Alameda's generation resources remain on-line, we don't foresee any difficulties. Also, through our participation in the Northern California Power Agency, power transmission resources should stay adequate and available. We're in good shape."

Alameda has joined with other public power communities in Northern California to develop, operate, and participate in geothermal, hydroelectric, landfill gas, and wind facilities. "Over 85% of the power consumed in Alameda is generated using these clean, renewable resources. In fact, we've been above 80% renewable for well over a decade," Fong explained.

The municipal utility also has joined in an agreement that essentially secures transmission from these facilities to our city. Barring a catastrophic major transmission line failure or system collapse, Alamedans should not be subject to calls for extreme power reduction measures.

Fong added, "Of course, we continually encourage the wise use of all energy resources. The kilowatt-hours Alameda saves then may be made available to other communities who are in less-fortunate circumstances."
