For Immediate Release
COMMUNITY MEETINGS TO BE HELD
ON POWER PROJECTS
Meeting Schedule ALAMEDA, Calif., April 2, 2002 -- Alameda Power & Telecom will host a series of community meetings on power supply alternatives, including possible development of a new, local power plant.
To assure maximum public participation, three hearings will be held during April:
- Thursday, April 11: Council Chambers at City Hall
- Tuesday, April 16: Paden Elementary School, 444 Central Avenue
- Monday, April 22: Bay Farm Island Elementary School, 200 Aughinbaugh
The meetings will all begin at 7 p.m., and will also be cablecast simultaneously on Channel 15.
Power Report A recently completed study indicates that, within five years, Alameda Power
& Telecom will require additional power resources. Also, much volatility and uncertainty remains within the state's electric
industry, and an expansion of state controls could jeopardize the independence of municipal electric systems and place their
citizens at risk in terms of the costs and reliability of electric power.
Recommendations The study focused on meeting Alameda's needs for economical power and
maintaining local reliability. It recommends consideration of several alternatives, including a municipal solid-waste
gasification plant, a combined-cycle power project, and distributed generation facilities.
The report is available for public review at Alameda public libraries, the Alameda Power & Telecom
Service Center at 2000 Grand Street, and
here (PDF file).
