COME JOIN THE CELEBRATION!
ALAMEDA, Calif., June 1, 2003 —
Once again, Alamedans will join together in celebrating Independence Day
with our spectacular annual Mayor's Fourth of July Parade. Did you know that
our Parade is one of the largest Fourth of July parades in the nation?
And again this year, Alameda Power & Telecom will celebrate our community's
energy and telecommunications independence as part of the party.
The Public Utilities Board and Alameda Power & Telecom will be a major
part of the parade and also will assist in the production of the festivities.
"Our City has good reason for pride in this enterprise," according to General
Manager, Junona Jonas. At 116 years, Alameda Power & Telecom is the oldest
municipal utility west of the Mississippi and is among the oldest utilities of any
kind, anywhere!
Alameda knows how to make the most of its assets. Since 1914, Alameda Power &
Telecom has returned well over $80 million to the City's General Fund. During the
2003 fiscal year alone, the return to the City, stemming from 33,000 customers, exceeded
$2.4 million in transfers, payments in lieu of taxes, and franchise taxes. At the same time,
rates remain
significantly lower than those in other communities.
The lights stay on and customers stay connected in Alameda. We have a
great reliability record and much success by investing in power resources
that are economical, reliable, and good to the environment. Some
80% of Alameda's power is generated using renewable resources. We've
also invested in the best telecommunications technology available so
that our customers enjoy a better entertainment, commercial, and
education value, with superb service, more channels, and local control.
"Early in our history, the 'Alameda Electric Lamp Post' was a model for
streetlight systems across the country," Junona recounted. "Now, we're making
history in the telecommunications industry and setting new standards for
cable television and Internet value, quality, and service, as well."
