GENERATION REPORT RESCHEDULED
ALAMEDA, Calif., September 16, 2004 -
Alameda Power & Telecom staff has advised that the final draft report, "Investigation into Municipal Solid Waste Gasification
for Power Generation" will be submitted to the City of Alameda Public Utilities Board at its meeting on October 18.
According to utility spokesman Matt McCabe, "We had anticipated that the report would be presented to the Board on Monday evening,
September 20. A technical issue developed that might have resulted in an omission of some material, and we want to ensure that the
Board has an opportunity to consider a complete document.
Unfortunately, that effort could not be concluded in time for the meeting next week."
"The report is one part of an ongoing effort to secure environmentally responsible resources. No decision to employ the technology
is being recommended at this time. We will only commit to those technologies that are certain to be in accordance with community
goals," according to McCabe.
Alameda Power & Telecom's commitment to the use of clean power is evidenced by the utility's current power-generating sources.
Over 90% of the power consumed in Alameda comes from renewable resources, including geothermal and hydroelectric facilities.
"We're also investigating solar, wind, and existing landfill gas," McCabe noted.
In contrast, the State of California has set a goal that 20% of the state's total energy will be derived from renewable
sources by the year 2017.
"We're confident that the Board will have a complete report in October and regret this technical delay," McCabe said.
