SCHOOLS FEATURED ON WEB

ALAMEDA, Calif., January 6, 2005 - Approximately 11,000 students are served by the 18 schools and 3 support sites that make up the Alameda Unified School District. Those facilities also make the District one of Alameda Power & Telecom's largest customers!

A new feature on the Alameda P&T website details the many efforts that have been made by the District and Alameda P&T to make our schools among the most energy-efficient anywhere.

Energy-efficiency measures reduce school operating costs, are part of energy-efficiency education, and create a healthier environment for students, teachers, other District staff, and our community. By participating in Alameda P&T energy management programs, the Alameda Unified School District has saved $2.2 million in energy costs alone in less than 10 years.

Visitors to http://www.alamedapt.com/aboutus/schools/index.html now can see those measures already implemented at each school site, including rebates provided by Alameda P&T, operating cost savings, cumulative cost savings since 1995, and energy savings, as well as continuing plans.

For over a decade, Alameda P&T has provided rebates for efficient lighting, motors, and heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning equipment; energy audits and advisory services; and metering studies and monitoring. In the near future, Alameda P&T expects to add such services as ENERGY STAR® network solutions that reduce the energy use of all computers in the District.

The site also provides detail on the SchoolNET project that brings the benefits of high-speed telecommunications services, courtesy of Alameda P&T, throughout the District. Site visitors also can learn how their Alameda P&T cable television and Internet subscriptions can offer direct financial contributions to the Alameda PTA.

All California school districts face similar challenges, bringing all students up to the California State standards and doing it with shrinking budgets. Energy-efficiency programs and services are responsive to these challenges, as they reduce the operating costs of schools and thus provide more funds for education.

By working directly with District facilities staff, school administrators, and teachers and pursuing collaborations with outside organizations such as ENERGY STAR and the California Energy Commission, Alameda P&T and the District are setting an example for school districts across the State.
