Steve Menger, an Alameda Firefighter since 1991, carried two terrified residents down a thirty-five foot extension ladder.

The residents were trapped in their apartment by a smoky fire in the building. One of the tenants was a quadriplegic, therefore unable to hold onto Steve as he carried her down the ladder to safety. Steve ascended the ladder again to carry her mother down to safety as well. On his days off Steve organizes the Alameda Firefighters "Fill the Boot" campaign to support research for a cure for muscular dystrophy.
