City of Alameda Heroes - 2005

Armed Forces Award

Sponsored by Alameda Council of the Navy League

Responding to a Mayday call from the operator of the "Fast Forward", a 38" racing sailboat, Petty Officer David C. Kendall arrived at the scene to find the sailboat lying on it's side, being swept towards the rocks of Pt. Bonita.

With no time to throw a tow line, he ordered the sailboat's skipper to abandon his vessel and maneuvered the Life Boat to a point where they could pull him out of the ocean.

Petty Officer Kendall's calm demeanor under pressure and his ability to make the right, split second on-scene decisions allowed him to successfully save the sailboat's operator while keeping his own crew and Motor Life Boat out of harms way.
