On August 10th, 2005, the Alameda Police Department's Special Duty Unit received information from a reliable informant that a subject was in possession of a stolen vehicle and gun. The Special Duty Unit arrived in the area and the Unit's supervisor, Sergeant Hoshman Durani, began putting together an Operations Plan prior to contacting the suspect. As Sergeant Durani was briefing his unit, the suspect drove towards the officers in a stolen car. The suspect rammed a marked patrol car which was driven by Officer Rick Bradley. Sergeant Durani turned towards the suspect's vehicle as the suspect accelerated and drove directly at him. Before he could get out of the way, the suspect's vehicle struck Sergeant Durani and threw him approximately 50 feet. As this was happening, Sergeant Durani was able to draw his weapon and discharge one round, striking the suspect. The suspect then pointed his vehicle towards Officer Shawn Fernandez in an attempt to hit Fernandez, who discharged his weapon, striking the suspect. The suspect then crashed into a wooden beam and, as he exited the vehicle, began to fight with officers. Officers John Kaanehe, Rick Bradley and Mike Abreu took the suspect into custody and immediately took control of the scene, assuring that Sergeant Durani received medical attention from the Fire Department.
